Cataract removal...

It is no longer necessary to wait until a cataract is "ripe" before performing surgery. The correct time for you to consider surgery is when you are having problems with vision that interfere with your life. Perhaps reading is becoming difficult, perhaps car headlights cause annoying glare or perhaps you find it hard to recognise people across the other side of the street.

The key to modern surgery is the phacoemulsification machine. This machine generates an ultrasonic force which is delivered to the cataract via a titanium tip. This fragments the cataract into tiny particles which are aspirated out of the eye in a computer controlled flow of saline. A plastic lens implant is then folded up and injected into the eye. No stitches are used and there is no limitation on physical activity afterwards.

The operation is done using a local anaesthetic and you need only be in the day case cataract unit for less than two hours.
