Cataract operation...

What can you expect to happen on the day of surgery?

As the operation is under local anaesthetic, you can eat and drink quite normally before the operation. On arrival you will have drops put into your eye over a period of about forty minutes to dilate the pupil.

You will then be taken to the operating theatre and made as relaxed and as comfortable as possible. I will be there together with a consultant anaesthetist. The local anaesthetic is usually an injection into the skin around the eye, but it may be possible for you to have a no-injection anaesthetic (using eye drops).

There will then be a pause for about five minutes to make sure that the local anaesthetic is working properly. You will then lie quite flat and will be covered with a surgical drape and the operation will begin. I generally have some music playing as I operate. The operation will take between ten and twenty minutes. You will then be taken back to the waiting room where you can have a drink and a biscuit before going home.
