Some background details...
I was brought up in Solihull, West Midlands and from there I went to Cambridge University, initially to read engineering, and then medicine. I graduated with a first class degree and trained in ophthalmology at Oxford Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. At Moorfields, as a lecturer on the academic unit, I developed my own special interests, taught junior doctors and carried out research on a wide variety of topics including glaucoma, cataract surgery, refractive surgery, blepharospasm, keratoconus and corneal graft surgery. I have published over twenty academic articles including two leading articles in the British Medical Journal and two chapters in text books.
After some years in Shrewsbury as an NHS consultant ophthalmologist, I chose to move back to the West Midlands. No longer tied by the constraints of a hospital job, I set up my day case cataract unit which is licensed by the Healthcare Commission.
